ABOUT THE BAND

canary mine - JAMES LANBRO - CARL WELCH - MIM ADAMS - JOE ARNUP - canary mine

Canary Mine can be described as folk-hop: a humourous mix of folk, rock, country and hip-hop. Their music has been aired on CBC national radio, and has charted on college stations across the country. They performed on Breakfast Television in 2008, and in 2007 their songs were featured in the movie Weirdsville directed by Allan Moyle.

Band members from Canary Mine have worked together in various projects for more than a decade. They officially became Canary Mine in February 2004 when James asked Carl and Mim to help him out with a demo recording. Joe quickly joined the project and the demo turned into Canary Mine’s first album and a cross-Canada tour.

Over the years band has released two studio albums, two informal session albums, a holiday season EP, and most recently, a compilation of tunes from past records. They are currently working on a new album, set for release in winter 2010. They’ve toured western Canada four times, and will be touring Ontario in summer 2010.

JAMES LANBRO
guitar and vocals

James Lanbro is also known as the DJ and MC Jimi Maze. Born in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, he spent his youth hitchhiking, following The Grateful Dead, and living in a van. Today he spends his time recording, touring North America, and living in Toronto. He is proud to have toured every province and territory in Canada, thirty-six US states, and four continents. In 2009, his album “Homeless Cracker Maze” was printed onto vinyl by Deafwish Records, and features Jimi alongside a variety of Saskatchewan bluegrass legends. Talented with technology, James just came back from a high profile gig at the Vancouver Art Gallery during the 2010 Olympics.

MIM ADAMS
keyboard and vocals

Outside of Canary Mine Mim is a busy vocal instructor. She conducts and arranges for two jazz choirs at York University and teaches group vocal classes at Mohawk College. She also teaches privately, and is the co-developer of The Full Voice Workbook Series. It was community theatre that really got Mim into music. She particularly loved performing in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and traditional British Pantomimes. While still a teenager she branched into musical direction, which led to studying music at Mohawk College. Her favourite singers ever are Joe Williams and Mark Murphy. She also loves hamburgers and chocolate chip cookies.

CARL WELCH
drums and vocals

Carl was born somewhere near London, Ontario, and now lives there again, running a jam-shed studio that was transformed from an old pig barn. Carl originally began playing the drums as part of a fraud ring. He and his friends would record music at home to trade with other kids, promoting their homemade tapes as the best ever. The scam scored Carl classic tapes by Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and more. In the end the racket failed, so they decided they should actually learn to play. Since then, little has changed except the band names and the mates.

JOE ARNUP
bass

Joe Arnup stays very active in his Toronto neighbourhoood, but also enjoys getting back to his hometown of Killaloe, Ontario. Besides playing bass in Canary Mine, Joe operates a small production studio where he creates a broad range of audio projects, including his electronic side project The Spies of Life. He enjoys cycling, basketball, tennis and is a world class crokinole player. An experienced and quite frankly awesome cook, “Yo Ho” is the official tour chef when the band is on the road.
